The 2012 London Olympics beginning July 27 is expected to be one of the biggest sports extravaganzas of the decade. This Olympics has been dubbed as the ‘Social Media Olympics’. This is going to be the first Olympics that will have the largest number of fans following their favorite athlete on social networking sites.
Popular social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter are going to be the most accessed during the event. Fans from all over the world are hoping to interact with their favorite athletes through social media. Knowing the importance of social media in 2012s Olympic event, the Olympic Committee has come up with Olympic Athletes Club, a site that focuses on athletes and social media connections.
The site integrates social media sites that include Facebook, Google Plus, Foursquare, Instagram, Tumblr and Twitter. It’s been only 60 days since the site has been rendered active and already Instagram’s Athlete account on this site has an astonishing 30,000 followers. More than 2000 athletes have signed up on this site. All an individual has to do is punch in the name of his/her favorite athlete and their profile page appears.
