India has recently shown signs of a major expansion in the market of mobile phones. This expansion has received a major setback with research showing that almost a third of mobile numbers that were issued are no longer being used.
By official records there have been 900 million mobile numbers that have been issued but about 300 million of these numbers are no longer in use. The setback is mainly because now this research has shown that only two of every four people use a mobile phone as compared to the previously thought three of every four people.
This has decreased the percentage of people using mobile phones from 75% to 50%. Earlier, a number of mobile companies were provided a greater spectrum based on the number of customers. This was the main reason why a number of companies had inflated the number of subscribers. It was then very difficult for these operators to delete these numbers.
