Popular tablet and smartphone manufacturer Apple has issued a warning to its product users in regard with texting after a post about a flaw in implementation of SMS made by an iPhone jailbreak artist had users screaming mad. According to pod2g, a security researcher, all versions of iOS have a flaw, and this includes latest beta of the next OS version 6.0, beta 4.
The flaw in mobile operating system can be used to exploit iOS and send spoof SMS messages. Although SMS is a technology that is regarded technically safe, Apple has encouraged its users to opt for iMessage instead of SMS service provided by their carrier. In a statement the company said” Apple takes its security very seriously. When using iMessage instead of SMS, addresses are verified, which protects against these kinds of spoofing attacks”.
The statement further read” One of the limitations of SMS is that it allows messages to be sent with spoofed addresses to any phone, so we urge customers to be extremely careful if they are directed to an unknown website, or address over SMS”. Tech experts are of the opinion that The SMS problem can be resolved if iOS displays addresses of the’ original’ and ‘reply to’ platforms. By doing so users would be able to match addresses to ascertain whether the SMS received is genuine or a scam.
