Social media giants Google and Facebook have had a smooth ride in India, until now. The Delhi High Court has asked the two social media heavyweights to review and filter the content on their respective sites. The issue about removal of objectionable content and offensive material from various social networks has been going on for quite some time in India. The Delhi High Court in its warning has made it clear that objectionable content or offensive material that hurts the sentiments of people in India will not be tolerated.
In a stern warning the High Court also made clear that if Facebook India and Google India do not come up with a way to filter or remove content form their respective sites, their portals will be blocked. In the past China blocked all websites that had objectionable content. Will the same happen to Google and Facebook in India? If the two social media giants do not come up with an alternative to comply with High Court demands, the end for the two is inevitable.
