Mobile phone subscriptions cross 5 Billion mark

Today was a big day for all the mobile operators around the globe. A staggering 5 billion people on this planet have a mobile phone connection today. If we go by the numbers, within 5 years the number of mobile phone connections will exceed the number of people on this planet. Currently population of our Earth is 6.8 billion.

In any way, this achievement is majorly due to China and India. Five years back there were only 720 million mobile phone subscribers in the world. Today China alone has that many subscribers whereas India comes second with 600 million subscribers. Most of the connections provided today are 2.75G networks even when 3G networks faster. Currently 500 million users worldwide and a few in India enjoy the privilege of using 3G network. By 2015 it is believed that this number would cross 3.5 billion.
