In the past few months Shell Oil has faced nightmarish hell on social media. Recently a website that called itself ‘Artic Ready’ had appeared. It had the Shell Oil logo and deceived people into believing it was a site that educated public about Shell’s drilling campaigns for oil up North.
What’s more the site also has an ad generator, a social media component that allowed users to caption photos provided supposedly by Shell. Although similar to Shell’s original Artic-focused section, this fake site was the work of anti-Shell groups Greenpeace, Occupy movement, and the Yes man.
Although several social media sites have published information about the site being fake, users continue to visit that site and get deceived. This site has caused Shell a great deal of trouble and embarrassment. Just last month pranksters had used You Tube to make a supposed Shell event gone horribly wrong go viral. Shell for once is sure shell shocked. What’s in store for them in the future, let’s wait and watch.
