SMS limit increased from 5 to 20 per day for prepaid users by Indian Government

The ban on bulk SMSs has not gone down too well with prepaid users. Earlier the limit was restricted at 5 SMSs per day. After being severely criticized in regard with this decision the government has eased the restriction by increasing the SMS capacity to 20 SMSs per day.

The SMS restriction originally came into effect on 17th August after The Assam riots got out of hand and SMSs circulating rumors gained prominence. The false rumors circulated via SMS compelled many North Eastern people to flee from prominent cities fearing a backlash.

The ban on bulk SMSs will end on 31st August. Postpaid customers were not affected by this ban. An official was quoted saying” The decision to relax the permissible limit was taken after reviewing need and response of users, specifically pre-paid mobile customers who had to face a lot of problems due to restrictions from telecom operators”.  Do you believe it was the right decision by the government to impose a restriction on the number of daily SMSs?
