The most popular instant messaging app is all ready to come out with ‘WhatsApp Call’ feature which will enable WhatsApp users to call each directly without any costs involved apart from the data charges applicable as per his/her data plan. The App has started rolling out the update in a phased manner, after it was initially tested with a few select audiences a short while ago.
The update we’re talking about is version 2.11.528. However, there is a catch in how this feature can be activated. Once a user gets this update, he’ll have to wait to receive a call via the App from a user who already has this feature activated on his phone. Then, he can call another user to activate WhatsApp Call on his phone and that is how the more and more users can avail this feature.
However, we have heard from an industry source that only a limited number of activations were released initially and the users who have this feature activated are no longer able to pass on the feature to another user. Though, it can’t be long before this feature is available to more and more users of WhatsApp.
Although, there are many apps that offer free peer-to-peer voice calling like Viber, Hike and Skype, WhatsApp already has a huge customer base of approx. 700 million active monthly users it can reach out to and make a mark for itself in this segment. With this feature, WhatsApp has the potential to completely change the face of the telecom industry especially in a country like India where it has a customer base of close to 70 million active monthly users. It will come as no surprise considering that WhatsApp has almost killed off traditional text messaging.
As of now, this feature is being rolled out to Android users only and there’s no news of it being available for other OS based phones.
